Day in the Life

Balancing Structure and Independence

What does it actually look like to live at Virginia Independent Living? Our daily schedule is intentionally designed to bridge the gap between treatment and total independence. It provides enough structure to keep residents anchored, but enough freedom to allow them to build real-world life skills.

Morning

Routine & Intentionality

Wake Up & Mindfulness

Residents wake up, make their beds, and prepare breakfast in the communal kitchen. Setting a clean environment first thing in the morning builds mental clarity.

Morning Reflection

A quick, 15-minute house huddle or personal reflection to review daily goals, schedule outpatient appointments, and commit to a sober day ahead.

Afternoon

Productivity & Growth

Workforce & Community Engagement

This is the core of the day. Residents are off-site engaging in their required 32 hours of weekly productivity.

You will find our residents:

Evening

Connection & Accountability

Dinner & Life Skills

Residents return home. They prepare dinners, learn meal budgeting, and catch up with housemates about their day.

Recovery Community

Residents head out to local peer support meetings (12-Step, SMART Recovery, or Celebrate Recovery) or participate in an on-site house meeting focused on community accountability and mutual support.

Chores & Wind Down

Residents complete their assigned nightly household chores (sweeping, wiping counters, taking out trash) to keep the home clean and dignified.

Curfew & Quiet Hours

Curfew is enforced (11:00 PM on weekends). The house settles into quiet hours so everyone can rest safely and comfortably for the day ahead.
